Ideas for painting kids bedrooms with a variety of subjects and styles...

Ideas for painting kids bedrooms should be fun and you should have your child involved with the decorating process. Kids usually love bright colors that are high-energy. Use their favorite colors in their bedroom, but you may prefer to compromise by combining painting with easy-to-change accents.

Up until the ages of 10 or 11, most kids will prefer bright colors like red, orange, blue, yellow, green and purple. By the age of 12 or so, they begin preferring more subdued colors and a more sophisticated look.

Perhaps your child decides that orange and black are his or her favorite colors for the bedroom, for example.

Instead of painting kids bedrooms orange and black, compromise by buying orange lamp shades, window treatments or sheets that are these colors and use lighter colors for the walls.

In general, lighter colors reflect light and open up the room, while darker ones absorb light and make the room look smaller.

When painting kids bedrooms walls, instead of the traditional brush, use sponges, toothbrushes or cotton balls to create a fun pattern on the wall. Make sure the kids help you with the remodeling project. They will love it!!!

When painting kids bedrooms, the choice of colors is very subjective. Once you decide what you are going to use, coordinate the scheme with furniture, cabinets, window treatments, storage, bedding and other accessories in the room.

Understanding colors when painting & decorating kids bedrooms:

Primary colors are - red, blue and yellow

Secondary are - green, orange and purple. These are created by mixing two primary colors together.

Tertiary are the different shades of browns and grays you get by mixing primary with secondary colors.

• Green is created by mixing yellow and blue

• Orange is created by mixing yellow and red

• Purple is created by mixing red and blue

• The opposite or complementary color of red is green - the opposite of blue is orange - and the opposite of purple is yellow. Mixing these opposites will create the browns and grays.

• White is defined to be the absence of color and it reflects light. It is the most widely used pigment to create pastel tones when mixed with any other color. When added to any other color, white will soften and "cool" it down.

Colors are divided into two groups called "warm" and "cool" - warm ones will close the space, making it appear smaller.

Warm colors are not recommended for painting kids bedrooms that are small rooms. Cool colors will open the space up and are not recommended for very large rooms.

For example - warm reds and terracotta will make a room cozier, dramatic and warm.

Pale greens, yellows and off-whites will make the room feel larger and will introduce a light, airy feel.

If you're going to be painting kids bedrooms, protect the floors with newspapers or a drop cloth. On the walls and ceiling, it is best to use a water-based latex paint. The latex paint is the best because it will dry quickly and can be cleaned up with soap and water.

Glossy paints should be used for doors, window frames, bathrooms and furniture because you will be able to clean any stains with a wet sponge more easily and because a glossy, shiny finish repels water, hand prints and so on.

Oil-based paints are more durable but they will emit stronger toxic fumes and take longer to dry. And you will be using more toxic solvents like paint thinner or mineral spirits for cleanup when painting kids bedrooms.

As an alternative to kids bedrooms, consider using wallpaper, wall borders or use low or no-VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints that are healthier for kids rooms.

Again, you can get your children involved with the work and in choosing the style. Make sure the wallpaper and wall borders are the kind that can be scrubbed and stripped which makes them easy to remove later.
